Boston, MA, USA - March 19, 2023: St. Patricks Day Parade 2023. Flag carriers walk down the parade route starting off the parade.

1. South Boston Parade

This parade has been a staple in South Boston since 1901, making it one of the nation’s oldest and most beloved St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. It celebrates two holidays in one, as March 17th is the date that British troops withdrew from Boston in 1776 during the Revolutionary War, a holiday known as Evacuation Day

The trip to Boston is well worth it, as you’ll see an impressive display of bagpipes, elaborate floats, marching bands, and enthusiastic crowds dressed head-to-toe in green. This year, the parade will be held on March 15th at 11:30 am.

2. Holyoke Parade

A week after the South Boston Parade, Holyoke has a St. Patrick’s Day parade of its own. Nearly half a million people a year come into this town of just 45,000 residents to see the parade. The parade began in 1952 and has been televised live since 1959. This year’s parade will take place on March 22nd.

3. Patriot Place’s 15th Annual Irish Festival

For a large St. Patrick’s Day celebration, head to Foxboro on March 21st. The festival offers a full day of Irish culture without the parade crowds. It’s a free, family-friendly celebration that features live performances by Irish musicians and dancers. The festival takes place across several stages, including Six String Grill & Stage, The Harp, and Renaissance Boston Patriot Place Hotel.

There’s plenty to enjoy at the festival, from face painting to balloon and caricature artists. At the Irish Vendor Village, you’ll find authentic merchants selling traditional Irish goods and apparel. Authentic cultural flavor is added by the Providence Hurling Club and the Old Colony Highland Pipe Band. Throughout the day, the athletic artistry of local Irish step dancing groups will perform on the Dean College Stage.

4. Dining

Of course, you don’t need to travel far to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Local Fall River businesses and organizations also offer celebrations.

St. James Irish Pub: Each year, the Lions Club holds an Annual Irish Breakfast at St. James Irish Pub. This event is closed to the public and requires advance ticket purchase from the pub to enter. Be sure to plan ahead if you want to attend this community tradition.

Shorty’s Pub: While this year’s details haven’t been announced yet, Shorty’s Pub is known for hosting one of the area’s liveliest St. Patrick’s Day parties. Typically, this includes live music that keeps the celebration going well into the evening.

Troy City Brewing:  Another local favorite that typically celebrates St. Patrick’s Day is Troy City Brewing. In years past, the bar has offered green beer and a seasonal Irish Red during the holiday. The laid-back atmosphere is perfect for a more relaxed celebration.

Planning Ahead for the Holiday

Whether you’re consuming cannabis before you head out to the festivities or drinking the green beer and Irish whiskey available at the venues, you’ll want to arrange safe transportation to and from the celebration.

For further destinations, consider rideshare services, designating a sober driver, or using public transportation. For local gatherings, you may have the option to walk or bike to your destination, depending on how far it is from your home.

And the weather can be unpredictable in Massachusetts. March can bring temperatures in the 30s to 50s, so be sure to wear something warm. Check the weather forecast before leaving for any signs of wet weather and bring a waterproof jacket if needed. If there is a chance of rain or snow, don’t forget to bring waterproof footwear if you’ll be standing outside for parade viewing.
